A warm welcome, spacious rooms & scenic views all await you at Mountain View, a rural family run bed and breakfast near Newmarket, County Cork.

We are one of the few pet friendly B&Bs in the area. Dogs & other pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Children are also most welcome, no charge for babies under 2. We provide a free travel cot & high chair (please mention when booking if you require these)

We are ideally located as a central base for exploring the Co. Cork/Kerry & Limerick region of the Republic of Ireland, being less than one hour's drive from Cork City, Blarney, Killarney, Listowel, Kenmare, Ballybunnion & Tralee. You can head off in a different direction each day & always find plenty to see & do.

We offer a choice of breakfasts, including full Irish, which are served in our spacious dining area overlooking a large koi carp pond. In winter watch the vast array of garden birds on our feeders & bird table. Soya/vegetarian & gluten free options are available for breakfast by prior request. We have our own free range hens who lay us fresh eggs every day. We also produce our own honey from 2 beehives. Children are welcome to feed the hens & collect the eggs under supervision.

Dogs are allowed to stay in your room while you are on the premises & can be walked on a lead in our large garden or alternatively there are quiet country lanes all around the property. We offer an evening dog sitting service for well behaved dogs.

Mountain View is situated part way along the Beara Breifne Way (BBW) a new waymarked cycle/walking route from Beara in Cork to Breifne in Co. Leitrim. See website links for further details.

You will find us on the R576 approximately 2.6 miles outside of Newmarket in the direction of Rockchapel. Newmarket is a small town with a selection of shops, pubs & an excellent Chinese restaurant. Close by is Meelin, the highest Irish village. Here you will find a restored lime kiln. Meelin & the surrounding area were renouned for lime extraction & many derelict lime kilns can be seen in the local fields.

Kanturk is a 5 minute drive from Newmarket, it's a slightly larger town, it has several good restaurants & many bars, a 3 screen cinema, a ruined castle & a beautiful riverside park with a children's play area. Here the Rivers Dallau & Allow converge.

If you are planning a walking holiday to Ireland, especially with your dog, we are the ideal base. We are close to the Mullaghareirk Mountains & there are several new Trailhead (waymarked) looped walks within a 10-20 minute drive (Packed lunches, leaflets & ordinance survey maps available). Those who enjoy bird watching & nature in general will be amazed at the superb flora & fauna. We are near several conifer plantations & blanket peat bogs with miles of unspoilt countryside tracks to explore

Hen harriers, ravens & dippers breed locally as do hares, stoats & and secretive red squirrels which can often be see in Island Wood Forest Recreation Area. This is a large mature wood 2 miles from Newmarket with river walks & a picturesque picnic area. Dogs can be walked off the lead & it's suitable for buggies/wheelchairs in places. See Photo gallery for more details.

Millstreet Country Park (35 minutes away) is a stunning 500 acre country park set against the backdrop of Musheramore Mountains. Here you can find true wilderness: cascading waterfalls & lakes are home to brown trout (fishing available). A little bus takes visitors around the higher reaches of park. It has a fantastic restaurant (new menu for 2010 including several venison dishes & locally sourced smoked salmon), outdoor games for children, walking trails & its own herd of pedigree red deer. See website links for details.

A visit to Cork City itself is must, the Lonely Planet Guide has ranked Cork City as one of 2010s must see destinations. It is about 50 minutes drive from Newmarket to Cork or there are regular buses/trains from Mallow. Why not visit in October during the world famous Guinness Jazz Festival? More information is available on the Link to Cork/Kerry tourism. If you fancy kissing the Blarney stone, Blarney Castle is just a few minutes from Cork with regular coaches trips from the city. Cobh is a beautiful town with a magnificent cathedral. It was the last port of call for the Titanic before her journey to America. Nearby Fota Wildlife Park will enthrall children & adults alike.

If sandy beaches are more tempting then Ballybunnion is the place for you. Just 35 miles from the B&B it is a bustling seaside town, a real must for families. It has miles of safe "blue flag" sandy beaches & rockpools. Enjoy spectacular clifftop walks, you might just see the bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon estuary. Nesting birds include Fulmar, Razorbill & Chough. There are shops, restaurants & bars galore in the town itself as well a brand new Leisure Centre with swimming pool, sauna & gym. In the summer months there are traditional seaside amusement arcades plus there is a superb playground next to the beach suitable for children of all ages.

There are several horse riding establishments near Mallow & around Co. Cork & indeed in Killarney National Park. See the Links sections below for details. Gooseberry Hill Equestrian Centre is nearby in Newmarket.

Fly fishing for brown trout is available (16 Feb - 30 Sept) on the River Dallau in Newmarket & Kanturk Trout Fishing club also allows fishing on 14 miles of the River Allow, Day Tickets available. Approx 25 minutes drive from the B&B is Ballyhass Lakes, a large managed trout fishery. Its open all year & has a tackle shop onsite. Boat hire is available or you can fish from the bank. Also nearby is the River Blackwater famous for its salmon fishing. We have a large drying room for wet clothes in case it happens to rain!

An ideal place to take younger children is Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary (free entry) you can stroke the rescued donkeys & there is a short hillside walk, picnic area & a small gift shop. Liscarroll village has a lovely playground for young children. See the photo gallery for more information

In nearby Castleisland are the spectacular Crag Caves, guided tours available. There is a restaurant, gift shop & a large ball pond play area for children up to the age of about 12.

Golfers will no doubt be familiar with the vast array of 18 hole courses in the Cork/Kerry region & we are an ideal base for playing several courses; Macroom, Kanturk, Charleville, Mallow, Cork, Abbeyfeale, Ballinamona, Blarney, Beaufort & the famous links course at Ballybunnion being just a few. Newmarket itself has a floodlit golf driving range, just outside the town on the Kanturk road.

For horse racing enthusiasts we are central for Cork racecourse (Mallow), Listowel, Tralee & Killarney. There are flat & jump fixtures throughout the year.

Mallow is our nearest large town approx 30 minutes by car. Plenty of shops & places to eat. The River Blackwater runs through the town park. It also has a Genealogy & Heritage centre & a train station with links to Cork, Limerick, Killarney, Tralee & Dublin.

Killarney is also approx 45 minute drive from Newmarket, with the breathtaking Ring of Kerry & Dingle just beyond. Book a coach tour & see all the famous sites or take a ride in one of the famous horse drawn carriages called jaunting cars. Stop for afternoon tea at Muckross House & wander through its beautiful gardens. In the summer months their traditional working farm is open to the public. Also well worth a visit is the magnificant Torc waterfall (free entry), jaunting cars will take you there from Muckross House or you can visit independently. There are many walking trails throughout the region & pony trekking as well.

Tralee town has the Aquadome a large swimming pool with wave machine, watershutes & saunas/gym for adults. It also has outdoor mini golf in the summer months & a multiplex cinema recently opened next door. Blennerville Windmill is also worth a visit. There is very good birdwatching on the estuary nearby.

For those interested in researching family history other villages nearby also include; Rockchapel, Kiskeam, Freemount, Lismire, Boherbue, Liscarroll, Ballydesmond, Brosna & Taur.

We are just over an hour's drive from Cork & Shannon airports, so we are ideally placed as a stopover for flights to/from America. Kerry airport is a little closer. There are railway stations at Banteer & Mallow. We are approximately 3 hours drive from Dublin & Rosslaire Ferryports. Please note there is hardly any public transport ie buses locally & very few taxis, therefore a car is definitely recommended to enjoy your stay fully.
