Whether it is a business trip, a family holiday, short break or just a single night stopover on the way back to the airport you will be assured of a peaceful & enjoyable stay. Evening meals provided by prior arrangement. Please see my photo galleries (slideshows) & links at the foot of the page to other useful websites.
We are located 2 miles outside Newmarket, a small but lively town with plenty of shops, pubs & an excellent Chinese restaurant (European meals served too). Close by is Meelin, the highest Irish village. Here you will find a restored kiln. Meelin & the surrounding area were renouned for lime extraction. It is said the lime from Meelin was used in the construction of St Finbarr's cathedral in Cork City.
Kanturk is a 10 minute drive from Newmarket, it has several good restaurants & many bars, a 3 screen cinema, a ruined castle & a beautiful riverside park with a children's play area. Here the Rivers Dallau and Allua converge, watch the salmon leap in the autumn or the dippers and little egrets feeding in the rivers.
An ideal place to take younger children is Liscarrol Donkey Sanctuary (free entry) you can stroke the rescued donkeys & there is a short hillside walk, picnic area & a small gift shop. In nearby Castleisland are the spectacular Crag Caves, guided tours available. It has a wonderful restaurant, gift shop & a large ball pond play area for children up to the age of about 12.
The River Blackwater is famous for its salmon fishing, it is about a 20 minute drive away, as is the River Feale just north over into Kerry. Trout fishing is also popular with Ballyhass Lakes, a local trout fishery, open all year. We have a large drying room for wet clothes in case it happens to rain!
For walkers we are close to the Mullaghareirk Mountains & also 2 Trailhead loop walks (12 and 7km) both waymarked; one takes you to the source of the River Blackwater. Those who enjoy birdwatching and nature in general will be delighted with with superb flora & fauna. We are near several conifer plantations & blanket peat bogs with miles of unspoilt countryside to explore. Hen harriers, ravens & dippers breed locally. Hares, stoats & badgers are also seen, as are secretive red squirrels which are present in Island Wood. This is a large mature wood with trails, river walks & a picturesque picnic area. Dogs can be walked off the lead & it's suitable for buggies/wheelchairs in places. See my photo gallery for pictures.
If sandy beaches are more tempting then Ballybunnion is the place for you. Just 35 miles from Mountain View it is a bustling traditional seaside town, a real must for families. It has miles of safe "blue flag" sandy beaches, not a stone in sight. Enjoy spectacular clifftop walking, you might just see the bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon estuary. There are shops, restaurants & bars galore in the town itself. In the summer months there are traditional seaside amusement arcades plus a large playground for children.
Golfers will no doubt be familiar with the vast array of 18 hole courses in the Cork/Kerry region & we are an ideal base for playing several courses; Macroom, Kanturk, Charleville, Mallow, Cork, Abbeyfeale, Ballinamona, Blarney, Beaufort & the famous links course at Ballybunnion being just a few. Newmarket itself has a floodlit golf driving range, just outside the town on the Kanturk road.
For horse racing enthusiasts we are central for Cork racecourse (Mallow), Listowel, Tralee & Killarney. There are flat and jump fixtures throughout the year.
Mallow is our nearest large town approx 30 mins by car. The River Blackwater runs through the town park. It also has a Genealogy & Heritage centre & a train station with links to Cork, Limerick, Killarney, Tralee & Dublin.
A visit to Cork City itself is must, it is about 50 mins drive or there are regular buses/trains from Mallow. What about a visit in October during the world famous Guinness Jazz Festival? More information is available on the Link to Cork/Kerry tourism. If you fancy kissing the Blarney stone, Blarney Castle is just a few minutes from Cork with regular coaches trips from the city.
Killarney is also approx 50 min drive, with the breathtaking Ring of Kerry & Dingle just beyond. Book a coach tour & see all the famous sites or take a ride in one of the famous horse drawn carriages called jaunting cars. Stop for afternoon tea at Muckross House & wander through its beautiful gardens. In the summer months you will find a traditional working farm with home churned butter & fresh baked bread. Also well worth a visit is the magnificant Torc waterfall(free entry),jaunting cars will take you there from Muckross House or you can visit independently. There are walking trails throughout the region & pony trekking as well.
Tralee Aquadome has a large swimming pool with wave machine, watershutes & saunas/gym for adults. It also has outdoor mini golf in the summer months. Blennerville Windmill is also worth a visit at Tralee. There is very good birdwatching on the estuary at Tralee.
Millstreet Country Park is a stunning 500 acre country park set against the backdrop of Musheramore Mountains. Here you can find true wilderness: cascading waterfalls & lakes are home to brown trout & otters. A little bus takes visitors around the higher reaches of park. It has a fantastic restaurant, games for children, walking trails & its own herd of pedigree red deer. Visit www.millstreetcountrypark.com for more information.
Greenglens Arena is also in Millstreet, approximately 25 minute drive from the B&B. It hosts international show jumping events, pop concerts, and ice spectaculars including Disney On Ice. In nearby Banteer is the Glen Theatre which offers a programme of events throughout the year.
For those interested in researching family history other villages nearby also include; Kiskeam, Freemount, Lismire, Boherbue, Liscarroll, Ballydesmond, Brosna & Taur.
We are just over an hour's drive from Cork & Shannon airports, so we are ideally placed as a stopover for flights to/from America. Kerry airport is a little closer. There are railway stations at Banteer & Mallow. Please note there is no public transport ie buses locally, only taxis, therefore a car is definitely recommended to enjoy your stay fully.
